Excerpt: "I recently attended the International Aviation Women's Association GA conference in Napa, California and was fascinated to hear about one person’s aviation career journey. Kimberly Perkins is an ATP-rated pilot who commands a large, ultra-long-range business jet on behalf of one of the world’s largest publicly traded companies. With an impressive resume of aviation and educational credentials, she is an inspiration to many who meet her, especially when they learn that, beyond her busy professional and personal life, she has created a nonprofit (www.aviationforhumanity.org) to deliver school supplies and other donations to young school children in need across the world. Aviation is an industry that helps open our eyes to the truth that is out there; Captain Perkins helps those who are paying attention to realize that we can be the change we want to see in the world. (Editor's note: Kimberly Perkins writes about diversity issues in aviation, including these articles published byAIN: “How industry could attract more women to the flight deck,” and “It's time we all support gender parity.”
Although aviation—general and business aviation in particular—remains a “good ol’ boys club,” the times are changing. Fresh perspectives and ideas, like flowers in Spring, are everywhere, helping us navigate toward a better and more inclusive future, one where we break down stereotypes and open up the skies above us to a world of possibilities."

"Business aviation has a long tradition of philanthropy, both in the U.S. and on a global scale. One organization that tackles the latter is Aviation for Humanity, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to using the international aviation network to deliver humanitarian aid on a global scale. Kimberly Perkins, founder and executive director of Aviation for Humanity, developed the idea for the organization while she was a pilot in West Africa. Perkins recognized a lack of educational resources for students and communities in the region and realized that the aviation industry could help serve the deficit through volunteer action."

"The best thing that I ever did for my career was take that airline job in Nigeria, which led me to Malaysia, and eventually to my current job," she says, "Make your resume interesting by diversifying it in ways that you feel passionate about. If you love seaplanes, get your seaplane rating. If you love teaching, become not only a flight instructor but also a ground instructor. Do something that makes your resume stand out," Kimberly says. 'And, most importantly of all, never allow the inevitable obstacle deter you from pursuing your passion. You won't get every job that you apply for and you won't grease every landing. But, make your pilot group the supportive type, encourage each other, focus on your goals, and keep flying! " she says.

"How do you manage your schedules?

Kim: Time management is extremely important. Our daughter is the most important part of our lives. My mother is a huge help watching her when we're both gone flying. I work a rotation of 17 days away and 17 days home, so my husband usually tries to plan his
time away based on when I’m home.

Can women pilots 'have it all'? Family, kids, a flying career and a life?

Kim: It is possible to have it all, but not always all at the same time. I am finishing up my Master’s degree, I work full-time and teach undergraduate Aviation Science classes online. I am a wife, a mother, and a daughter. It is difficult to juggle it all, but it can be done with a support team, including teachers, grandparents and a supportive spouse. And some seriously good time management."
